The NFL community is growing increasingly uneasy about San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Once celebrated as a rising star, Aiyuk now finds himself at the center of a storm involving contract disputes, legal trouble, and concerning social media outbursts.
In 2023, Aiyuk looked like the future of the 49ers offense, hauling in 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. But a torn ACL in October 2024 sidelined him, and since then, his trajectory has taken a sharp turn. This past season, $27 million in guarantees were voided from his contract after he failed to meet certain conditions, and his frustration with the team has boiled over publicly.
Aiyuk's Social Media Rant Raises Red Flags
During a recent online rant, Aiyuk didn't hold back. “And another thing. You want to know why they really mad, though? They mad ’cause they stupid. They dumb,” he said. “They mad that they paid me $50 million in eight months and then voided my guarantees for 2027. And I’m about to be on a new team in 2027. They mad at themselves for real. They acting like they mad at me, but they stupid ass mad at themselves.”
That wasn't the only headline. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office also issued a warrant for Aiyuk's arrest over a speeding video, adding to the growing list of off-field distractions.
Jarvis Landry: 'It's Not the Same Brandon'
Former NFL wide receiver Jarvis Landry, a five-time Pro Bowler, spoke candidly on the “4th and South” podcast about his concerns. “Man, somebody needs to get that phone from him,” Landry said. “Where I see him at today, based on where I saw him two years ago, it’s not the same Brandon that I know. It’s not the same player, not the same man that I respected for how he played the game.”
Landry also warned that Aiyuk's behavior could scare off potential suitors. “Some people say any publicity is good publicity, but I feel like, as an organization, if I’m even considering bringing a guy like Brandon Aiyuk in, and I see the type of posts that he’s been posting, I don’t really know if he even really wants to play football like that,” he added. “I don’t really know if I want to bring someone like that into my organization. You’re a veteran in the league at this point. You’re a leader when you walk into a locker room.”
Landry's words echo a sentiment shared by many around the league: Aiyuk's recent actions suggest a player in distress, not just a disgruntled star looking for a trade.
Could a Trade Still Happen?
Despite the drama, trade rumors persist. ESPN's Adam Schefter noted earlier this offseason that the Washington Commanders could be a logical destination. “I think they will be holding onto him to see if there’s any trade value at all. Washington does make a lot of sense,” Schefter said. “He played with Jayden Daniels in college. They’re very close. I’m sure Jayden would love to play again with Brandon Aiyuk, but I don’t get the sense that the 49ers are in any rush to move on from Brandon Aiyuk even though we know eventually they will.”
Aiyuk recently posted a photo of himself wearing a Commanders hat on Instagram, which only fueled speculation. But given his recent outbursts and the ongoing feud with the 49ers front office, teams may be hesitant to take on the baggage.
For now, the NFL community watches and waits—hoping the talented receiver can find his way back to the game, but fearing the worst.
