The basketball world is reeling after the heartbreaking news that Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke passed away at just 29 years old. The announcement, made Tuesday, has left fans, teammates, and colleagues in disbelief.
Clarke, selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, spent his entire seven-season professional career with the Grizzlies. He averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, earning a spot on the NBA's All-Rookie team in 2020. Before his NBA journey, he starred at Gonzaga, where he won WCC Newcomer of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Priority Sports, the agency that represented Clarke, confirmed his death in a statement. “We are beyond devastated by the passing of Brandon Clarke. He was so loved by all of us here, and everyone whose life he touched,” the agency said. “He was the gentlest soul who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family. Our hearts are so broken as we think of his mom, Whitney, his entire family, and all of his friends and teammates. From high school to San Jose State to Gonzaga to the Grizzlies, Brandon impacted everyone who was part of his life.”
The cause of death has not been disclosed. Clarke only appeared in two games this past season due to injury, but his impact on the court and in the community was immense.
Fans and media figures alike have expressed their grief. George Ruggiero of 92.9 ESPN Memphis wrote, “Absolutely heartbreaking. Prayers for BC and his family.” Connor Dunning, also of 92.9 ESPN, added, “Can’t believe this is true. Devastating. No real words right now except he will be greatly missed and remembered.”
Social media erupted with tributes from fans. One wrote, “Devastating news, rest in peace Brandon Clarke. 29 is so young.” Another said, “Nooo I was hoping this rumor wasn’t true. This is so crazy. RIP Brandon Clarke.”
The loss of Clarke at such a young age echoes other recent tragedies in sports, like the heat stroke confirmed as cause in tragic Texas train car deaths and the double tragedy at Zion that sparked safety concerns. It also brings to mind the Chiefs Super Bowl winner named person of interest in death of missing woman, reminding us how fragile life can be.
Our thoughts are with Clarke’s family, friends, and all who were lucky enough to know him.
