The music and theater worlds are reeling after the sudden passing of Duncan Sheik, the Tony and Grammy-winning composer whose work touched millions. He was 56 years old.
Sheik died Thursday night in Manhattan, surrounded by love, according to a family spokesperson. The news comes just days after it was reported that he was receiving medical care following a medical emergency. The cause was heart failure.

I literally met the love of my life doing Spring Awakening. 10 years later I had the rare opportunity to meet and perform for Duncan at a SONA event. He was a GEM! Such a character with boundless musical knowledge and wit for days. He was so kind to me and I’ll never forget the words of wisdom he imparted to me. RIP.”
Another recalled a chance encounter in the 1990s: “I met him in the 90s at a signing for his first album. We chatted for a bit and he put me on the guest list for his concert that night and chatted with me there too. Core memory.”
The loss resonates deeply within the theater community, where Sheik’s Spring Awakening score is considered a modern classic. As one fan noted, “This is such a profound loss.
