Saturday in Columbia was supposed to be a coronation for the Florida Gators. Riding a 4-0 wave and fresh off a statement win over Ole Miss, Jon Sumrall's squad looked like a legitimate contender. Instead, they walked into a buzzsaw named Missouri and got dismantled in front of a raucous home crowd.
The Tigers wasted no time establishing dominance, jumping out early and never letting up. By the time the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 45-17—a margin that flattered the visitors. Missouri's offense was unstoppable, with quarterback Austin Simmons torching the Gators' secondary for 340 yards and two touchdowns through the air. On the ground, Jamal Roberts was a wrecking ball, pounding Florida's defense for 211 yards and three scores on 24 carries.
For Florida, the loss was a harsh reality check. After four weeks of hype and talk about being on the verge of greatness, they were exposed on the road against a physical SEC opponent. The Gators' defense, which had been praised all season, looked helpless against Missouri's balanced attack.
Unsurprisingly, the college football world had plenty to say about the blowout. Social media erupted with reactions ranging from sarcastic to outright gleeful.
“I was told Florida was one offensive performance away from being compared to 2019 LSU,” one user quipped.
“MIZZOU HAS SPLATTERED FLORIDA,” another fan posted.
“Mizzou with a total destruction of Florida,” Clay Travis wrote. “You can make a strong argument given the opponent’s ranking and the margin that this is the biggest win Mizzou has had since joining the SEC.”
“Missouri is ASSAULTING Florida,” someone else exclaimed.
“AP Polls escorting Florida back out the top 25 citing they overreacted after they beat Ole Miss,” another added.
Even rival fans couldn't resist piling on. One user jokingly suggested that defensive back recruits should flock to Florida for early playing time, while Brandon Walker offered a self-deprecating take: “Felt terrible about how today went for my team and then I watched the Florida game. Thank you, Gators.”
For Missouri, this was a program-defining victory. Eli Drinkwitz's squad had been knocking on the door of national relevance, and this win—their first over an AP top-10 opponent since 2013—announced their arrival in emphatic fashion. The Tigers now carry that momentum into a home matchup against a two-loss Texas A&M team, and the buzz in Columbia is palpable.
As for Florida, the questions are mounting. Was the Ole Miss win a mirage? Is the defense as good as advertised? And can they bounce back from such a demoralizing defeat? The Gators will need to find answers quickly, because the SEC schedule doesn't get any easier.
For now, though, the spotlight belongs to Missouri—and to the fans who watched the Gators' hype train derail in spectacular fashion. This is the kind of loss that defines a season, and the growing push for a bigger playoff only adds to the stakes. Florida's path to redemption just got a whole lot harder, while Missouri's ceiling suddenly looks limitless.
