Florida State fans have been vocal about their desire to see head coach Mike Norvell out of Tallahassee for quite some time. The message, however, has fallen on deaf ears at the university. So, some supporters decided to take their frustration to the skies.
Before Saturday's clash between the Seminoles and the visiting Clemson Tigers, an airplane towing a banner was spotted above the stadium. The message was aimed directly at FSU and school chairman Peter Collins, demanding action. But there was one glaring problem: the coach's name was spelled incorrectly.
The banner read: “FSU: Fire Novell – Peter Collins.” Instead of “Norvell,” the banner displayed “Novell,” a spelling that quickly became a laughingstock on social media. Critics were quick to point out the irony of spending money on a protest that couldn't even get the basics right.
“Banner was supposed to say Norvell but FSU’s budget only covered six letters,” one user on X joked. Another wrote, “We can’t even spell correctly… Just burn it all down.” A third added, “Can’t spell and don’t know that Collins isn’t an employee. Other than that…”
The blunder didn't go unnoticed by those who spotted the typo. “It says Novell. But they did spell the board chair’s name correctly,” one observer noted, while another suggested, “Get a refund – they misspelled Norvell.”
The banner is just the latest expression of discontent from a fan base that has grown increasingly impatient. Norvell is in his seventh season at Florida State, but the program has fallen on hard times. After a 2-10 record in 2024 and a 5-7 mark in 2025, the Seminoles are 3-4 this season and face a tough test against Clemson. A loss would leave them in a precarious position with a demanding schedule ahead.
The glory days of 2023, when FSU went undefeated in the regular season, feel like a distant memory. As the losses pile up, the calls for Norvell's job are only getting louder—and now, they're literally flying overhead.
While the misspelling provided some comic relief, the underlying frustration is real. Fans are desperate for a return to prominence, and they're not shy about expressing it. Whether the banner will have any impact remains to be seen, but for now, it's a reminder that in college football, patience is often in short supply.
