The baseball world is mourning an unimaginable loss. Former MLB outfielder Gorkys Hernández has announced that his wife, Deisy Tovar de Hernández, passed away this week during the catastrophic earthquakes that shook Venezuela.
The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude tremors devastated parts of the country, with the death toll tragically climbing to 1,430 as of Saturday afternoon. Deisy was among those killed in the disaster, leaving Hernández and their family shattered.
Hernández took to Instagram on Saturday to share a deeply emotional tribute to his late wife, calling her “the queen of my life.” In his post, he wrote: “You are and always will be the queen of my life—the most beautiful, lovely, and precious woman in the world. You were the one who always found a way to lift me up during hard times; you were and remain the most beautiful woman of my life. You will always be with me, at every hour and in every moment. Fly high, my princess, my queen; may God hold you in His glory.”
He continued: “Guide me to keep moving forward and to lift up our family. Love you—rest in peace, my girl. Give me strength, love of my life, because we had a mission, and I am here to fulfill it. You taught me to be strong through life’s challenges—which is never easy—but that is how you want me to be, and that is how it will be. My warrior, Deisy Maria Tovar De Hernandez.”
The MLB community has rallied around Hernández, sending prayers and messages of support. One fan wrote on his Instagram: “Brother Gorkys, I am deeply sorry for the departure of your wife. There are no words that can ease such a pain, but I want you to know that you count on my prayers and support.” Another added: “My brother I’m with you, I ask God to fill your heart with strength.”
Hernández, 34, played in the major leagues from 2012 to 2019, appearing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Miami Marlins, San Francisco Giants, and Boston Red Sox. Known for his speed and defensive skills in the outfield, he was a fan favorite wherever he went. This tragedy has hit the baseball world hard, echoing other recent losses in the sport, such as former Marlins president David Samson mourning the death of his daughter.
Fans and former teammates alike are expressing their condolences. “Stay strong my brother. My deepest condolences,” another commenter wrote. The outpour of love underscores the tight-knit nature of the baseball community, which has faced its share of heartbreaking moments.
Our thoughts are with Gorkys Hernández and his family as they navigate this unthinkable tragedy. The loss of a loved one is never easy, and the circumstances make it all the more devastating. We join the entire sports world in sending strength and prayers to Hernández during this difficult time.
