The baseball world is rallying around former Miami Marlins president David Samson after he revealed the devastating loss of his 28-year-old daughter, Kyra. Samson, who stepped away from his popular 'Nothing Personal' podcast in September to care for her, announced on social media this week that Kyra had passed away peacefully.

'Yesterday, my daughter, Kyra, passed away peacefully after a 9 month and 11 day fight against one of the cruelest diseases I’ve ever seen up close,' Samson wrote on X. 'She was diagnosed with Brain Cancer, specifically Glioblastoma.'

Former MLB Outfielder Gorkys Hernández's Wife Killed in Venezuela Earthquakes
Deisy Tovar de Hernández, wife of former MLB outfielder Gorkys Hernández, was killed in the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck Venezuela this week, raising the death toll to 1,430.

Samson, a longtime figure in MLB front offices, had kept details of his daughter's illness private while she battled the aggressive brain cancer. He thanked fans and friends for their support, saying he 'felt all of your concern and love' during the difficult months. In his emotional post, he urged families to never endure such pain, writing: 'All I want is for no family to feel what we feel today. For no young person to suffer the way she did.'

In lieu of flowers, Samson established 'The Kyra Fund' to directly fund research into treatments for glioblastomas. As of this writing, the fund has already surpassed $120,000 in donations, a testament to the impact Kyra had on those around her.

Kyra was remembered as a vibrant soul who saw the world through a unique lens. According to the fund's description, she was 'an exemplary listener' who turned ordinary evenings into lasting memories. From insisting on sitting on the classroom floor in seventh-grade Spanish to believing she was somehow related to Abraham Lincoln, Kyra brought warmth and honesty into every conversation.

Samson's grief has resonated deeply across the sports community, with many former colleagues and fans offering condolences. The tragedy also echoes other recent losses in the sports world, such as the sudden death of former NFL star Aldon Smith at age 36.

Samson, who served as Marlins president from 2002 to 2017, has been a prominent voice in baseball media since leaving the team. His decision to prioritize family over his public role drew widespread respect, and the outpouring of support for the Samson family continues to grow.

'Kyra was a 28-year-old young woman who loved deeply and who is impossible to describe in 280 characters,' Samson wrote. 'While her life got stolen from her, she handled these months with courage, poise, and resolve.'

The Kyra Fund remains open for donations, with all proceeds directed exclusively toward glioblastoma research. The Samson family has asked for privacy as they mourn, but the legacy of Kyra's spirit—and the fight against the disease that took her—will endure.
