Brett Ballard, a former University of Kansas basketball player and assistant coach who now leads the Washburn University men's program, is recovering in a Topeka hospital after a serious highway accident Tuesday night.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said Ballard was driving his Ford F-150 on I-470 when the truck drifted off the left side of the road, struck a delineator post, slid down an embankment, and slammed into a concrete bridge pillar. The impact left the vehicle heavily damaged. Ballard, alone in the truck and wearing his seatbelt, was rushed to Stormont Vail Hospital. Authorities are still investigating what caused the crash.
News of the accident spread quickly, and the basketball community has rallied around the 45-year-old coach. Washburn University President JuliAnn Mazachek issued a statement saying, “Our hearts are with Coach Ballard, his family, the men’s basketball program and all who are affected during this difficult time.” Washburn football coach Zach Watkins added, “We prayed for him here as a team before practice and our thoughts are with him and his family.”

In 2017, he landed the head coaching position at Washburn, a Division II powerhouse. Under his leadership, the Ichabods won the conference title in 2021 and reached the Division II Final Four in 2025. Over the past two years, the program has been dominant, posting a staggering 61-6 record with back-to-back regular-season conference championships.
Ballard's success has made him a respected figure in college basketball circles. His teams are known for their discipline and execution, and his players often speak highly of his mentorship.
