Former ESPN personality Britt McHenry found herself in the middle of a chaotic scene at Capital One Arena on Wednesday night, when she was caught on video hurling a drink at a fan during the Milwaukee Bucks' season-opening win over the Washington Wizards.
McHenry, who previously appeared on SportsCenter and Outside the Lines, recently announced a career shift to the State Department as a press advisor. She had been soaking in the atmosphere at the Wizards' home opener when things took a turn.
TMZ obtained footage showing McHenry tossing a beverage toward a group of fans seated behind her. According to their report, the altercation stemmed from a series of inappropriate comments directed at McHenry during the game.
“Our sources don’t recall exactly what prompted Britt to throw the drink, but say it was part of the confrontation … and claim things were thrown at her, too. They also claim the group behind them were saying inappropriate and misogynistic things to Britt to instigate her,” TMZ reported.
Despite the heated exchange, McHenry appeared unbothered after the incident, even blowing kisses to the crowd as she made her way out. She later told TMZ that she was not ejected from the game, but chose to leave on her own while her male companion stayed to watch the rest of the action.
As of Thursday, there has been no word from the Wizards about any potential ban for McHenry from future games at Capital One Arena. The team will return home Friday night to host the Toronto Raptors.
This kind of fan-arena friction isn't new in the NBA. Just last season, a heated exchange between Angel Reese and a referee was caught on mic, highlighting how quickly emotions can boil over in the heat of competition.
McHenry's transition from sports media to diplomacy has been a major talking point, and this incident adds an unexpected layer to her new chapter. It remains to be seen whether the State Department will have any comment on the matter.
For now, the former ESPN star seems to be taking it all in stride, even as the video circulates online. The Wizards' front office has yet to release a statement, and McHenry has not publicly addressed the incident beyond her claim that she left voluntarily.
