The dream of seeing A.J. Brown in a Patriots uniform is starting to feel more like a distant fantasy. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Eagles and New England are stuck in a frustrating stalemate over the Pro Bowl wide receiver's trade value, and there's no end in sight.
Rapoport revealed Wednesday that Philadelphia is holding firm on a demand for a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. The Patriots, widely considered the most logical landing spot for Brown, simply aren't willing to meet that price. “They’re not particularly close,” Rapoport said, adding that the process “could drag on for the foreseeable future.”
The timing is especially tricky. Everyone is waiting for June 1 to pass, which would cut the Eagles' cap hit in half and make a trade more palatable. But Rapoport cautioned fans not to expect a quick resolution. “I just don’t know that it’s going to be like ‘snap your fingers and the deal is done,’” he said.
Meanwhile, the market for Brown has essentially shrunk to one team. Much like the Jets' pursuit of Aaron Rodgers in 2023, the Patriots have positioned themselves as the only serious suitor. They've reshaped much of their offseason around acquiring the three-time Pro Bowler, but that leverage cuts both ways. Philadelphia can play hardball, knowing New England has few alternatives. The Patriots, in turn, could wait for Brown's value to dip — a bad game or negative headlines — and swoop in at a discount.
Fans are growing impatient with the back-and-forth. Social media is flooded with skepticism, with one user writing, “Yall know dam well the deal been made weeks ago!” Another speculated that the NFL is dragging its feet to avoid the appearance of tampering. A third simply shrugged: “Remember all these guys have no idea what’s going to happen, they’re just guessing.”
For now, Brown remains an Eagle, though it's unclear how long that will last. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is staying focused on the new offense amid the swirling rumors, but the uncertainty can't be easy on the locker room. If a deal doesn't materialize soon, the Eagles may have to decide whether to lower their asking price or keep a disgruntled star on the roster.
On the Patriots' side, head coach Mike Vrabel is preaching a full-throttle approach to a 2026 title run, and adding Brown would be a massive step toward that goal. But the front office is clearly playing the long game, refusing to overpay for a player who might not be in the long-term plans at the current price.
As the June 1 deadline approaches, the standoff shows no signs of breaking. For now, both teams are waiting — and so are the fans.
