Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is set to make his much-anticipated return to the field in Week 1, and he's making one thing clear: he's not going to hold back. Nine months after suffering a torn ACL, the most significant injury of his career, Mahomes is ready to play the only way he knows how — full throttle.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mahomes expressed confidence in his recovery and his intention to resume his aggressive, playmaking style without hesitation. He credited his disciplined approach to rehabilitation, which included following every medical directive to the letter, for putting him in position to start the season on time.
“It’s nine months,” Mahomes said, via ESPN. “It’s the amount of time [doctors] said from the beginning, that if I did everything the right way, I would be ready to play Week One. I’m someone that, if you put [a goal] out in front of me, I want to go out and get it and maximize every single opportunity, every rep in the weight room, every hour that I can spend in the building to get my body right. This has always been the plan. From the day I got the surgery, as quick as I did, to hopefully the first game of the year, the plan will go accordingly, and I’ll be able to go out there and be myself.”
Mahomes has been a full participant in training camp, missing no practice time since camp began. He noted that he's completed every single rep, a testament to his commitment and the successful progress of his recovery. While he's been advised to ease up on hard cuts during drills, Mahomes admits his competitive nature sometimes gets the better of him.
“I try to not make those hard cuts, but at the end of the day I’m a competitor,” Mahomes said. “It just kind of takes over sometimes. You want to still prove it to yourself that you can do it. I’ve been able to do that in certain spots of making quick, reactionary cuts, which I think is the biggest thing. I’ve felt great doing it.
“The coaches kind of come up to me, like, ‘Hey, let’s calm down a little bit.’ Just being a competitor, I want to go out there and win and give everything I have for the team.”
The Chiefs are eager to put a disappointing 2025 campaign behind them. Mahomes was having a subpar season before the injury, and the team missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade. In response, the front office revamped the roster, adding playmakers like Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to the backfield.
With a healthier Mahomes and a bolstered supporting cast, Kansas City looks poised to reassert itself as a contender. The quarterback's unwavering mindset is a clear signal that he's not dwelling on the past or the risk of re-injury. Instead, he's focused on leading his team back to prominence.
As the season opener approaches, all eyes will be on Mahomes to see if he can indeed pick up where he left off. His determination to play his natural game is a promising sign for Chiefs fans who have been waiting for this moment. The road to recovery has been long, but Mahomes is ready to prove that he's still the same dynamic playmaker who took the league by storm.
