He coached the Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, and Golden State Warriors over a legendary coaching career that spanned more than three decades. He also had a stellar playing career with the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics, winning five championships with the Celtics in the 1960s and 70s.
As a coach, Nelson was a three-time NBA Coach of the Year and is widely considered one of the top 10 to 15 head coaches in league history. His innovative "Nellie Ball" style—characterized by small-ball lineups, fast pace, and positionless basketball—was ahead of its time and influenced generations of coaches.
Nelson's most notable coaching achievement came with the Warriors, where he led the team to a stunning upset of the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks in the 2007 playoffs, the first No. 8 seed to win a seven-game series in the NBA. He also coached the Mavericks for eight seasons, helping develop Dirk Nowitzki into an MVP and future Hall of Famer.
