The Colorado Buffaloes' 23-13 loss to Baylor on Saturday has left the fan base in a state of disbelief, but it wasn't just the final score that ignited the firestorm. It was head coach Deion Sanders' postgame remarks, which many are calling 'embarrassing' and out of touch with the team's glaring issues.
Special teams were a disaster for Colorado, allowing 130 punt return yards to the Bears, including four returns of 15 or more yards. Yet, when asked about the performance, Sanders seemed unfazed. "I mean, they returned some good balls, I don't think he really did any damage to us on the returns," he said.
That comment didn't sit well with the Buffaloes faithful, who took to social media to express their frustration. One fan wrote, "This program is very unserious. Unfathomably unserious. Embarrassingly unserious. Never saw this coming when this hire happened. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills." Another added, "I saw this coming from the start. He’s done nothing to build depth and it shows. True depth comes from solid high school recruiting, not just refilling your roster with portal guys every year. No real culture, and the coaching staff is a true clown show."
The criticism didn't stop there. One fan pointed out, "Sanders isn’t a good coach. He’s all talk and no bite. He was an amazing player but thinks that somehow will make him an amazing coach. This ain’t high school or the fcs with several fbs caliber players lol."
Despite the mounting pressure, Sanders remains convinced that Colorado is better than their 2-2 record suggests. "We’re better than this. It seems as though we’re better than our opponents, but the score does not dictate that. And that’s the fascinating thing, we’ve got to find out why," he said after the loss.
But as NFL legend Bill Parcells famously said, "You are what your record says you are." For a team that entered the season with high hopes, the reality is that Colorado has now lost two straight, and the special teams unit has been a glaring weakness.
The Buffaloes' struggles on special teams have been a recurring theme, and the lack of accountability from the head coach is only adding fuel to the fire. Fans are questioning not just the on-field performance, but the overall direction of the program under Sanders.
This isn't the first time Sanders has faced criticism for his postgame demeanor. Earlier this season, he made headlines with a controversial interview that left many scratching their heads. And as the losses pile up, the scrutiny is only intensifying.
With a tough schedule ahead, Colorado needs to find answers fast. But if Sanders continues to downplay the issues, the fan base's patience will only wear thinner. The Buffaloes' next game will be a true test of whether they can bounce back or if the season is spiraling out of control.
