The search for a missing Netflix star ended in tragedy on Sunday when his body was discovered following a devastating avalanche in Pakistan.
Nirmal Purja, the celebrated Nepali mountaineer who captured the world's imagination in the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, has been confirmed dead. The news was announced by the Nimsdai Foundation, the organization Purja founded to support climbing and humanitarian efforts.
Purja was leading a group of ten climbers on Broad Peak, a formidable 26,400-foot mountain in Pakistan, when a snowslide struck on Thursday afternoon. The Alpine Club of Pakistan initially reported the group as missing, sparking a desperate search effort.
In a statement, the Nimsdai Foundation paid tribute to Purja's enduring impact: "His legacy will live on in the countless lives he changed and the people he inspired to climb their own mountains."
From the outset, experts feared the worst. Napier Sandford Fuller, a mountaineering expert, explained the perilous conditions: "It had been raining every day, which means that at high altitude, it would have been snowing. I remember thinking, sh—, they're going to have a hell of a problem because if it's raining … for a week straight, it's going to have a huge snow load on that mountain."
Purja's death is a profound loss to the climbing community and beyond. He rose to global fame after completing all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks in just six months and six days, a record-breaking feat that was chronicled in the acclaimed Netflix film.
