The Indianapolis Colts have flipped the switch from contenders to rebuilders in the blink of an eye. After firing general manager Chris Ballard earlier this week, the franchise has made it clear: no one is untouchable. With the NFL trade deadline looming on Nov. 10, the Colts are ready to listen to offers for their biggest names, and the rumor mill is already churning.
According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Colts are willing to part ways with any of their star players, including defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, guard Quenton Nelson, and running back Jonathan Taylor. That's a seismic shift for a team that was supposed to be competing for a playoff spot just a few weeks ago. But now, with a new front office likely on the horizon, the roster is up for grabs.
Jonathan Taylor: The Prize of the Trade Market
Taylor, who has been a workhorse for the Colts, is having another solid season with 492 rushing yards, 163 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns in just six games. That production has caught the eye of several contenders, and ESPN's Stephen Holder reported that multiple teams have already expressed interest. The Giants' interest in Taylor has been particularly notable, with some even suggesting a blockbuster deal could be in the works.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport believes the Colts could fetch a first-round pick for Taylor, especially given the market for elite running backs. "You know the goal. They don't have a No. 1 pick because of the Sauce Gardner trade. You know that's what they're going to try to get back," Rapoport said. "If they have the kind of market that players never have during the season, maybe they can get it. Maybe they get a No. 1 pick and give something back."
The New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings, and Seattle Seahawks have all been mentioned as potential landing spots for Taylor. If he lands with a Super Bowl contender, his addition could be the final piece for a championship run.
Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner: Cap Casualties in the Making?
Nelson and Buckner are on expiring contracts, making them logical trade candidates. Moving them now would free up significant cap space and bring back assets for a team that's clearly looking toward the future. Nelson, a perennial All-Pro guard, would instantly upgrade any offensive line, while Buckner remains a disruptive force on the defensive line.
The Colts' decision to clean house comes on the heels of a disappointing start to the season. Head coach Shane Steichen's job may be safe for now, but the roster around him is about to look very different. The front office shake-up has also sparked speculation about Peyton Manning returning to the organization in a front office role, which would be a massive story in itself.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Colts are clearly in sell mode. Whether they can maximize their returns for Taylor, Nelson, and Buckner remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Indianapolis is open for business.
