NBC "Today" anchor Savannah Guthrie has been grappling with an unimaginable nightmare since her mother, Nancy Guthrie, vanished from her Arizona home in late January. While the family has been desperate for answers, a new revelation this week has sent shockwaves through the public: the alleged ransom note her captors sent is absolutely bone-chilling.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department has been unable to determine why Nancy was abducted from her Tucson residence on Jan. 31. But the note, which was reportedly delivered to Savannah, paints a terrifying picture of what the family has endured.
During Wednesday's episode of the Crime Junkie podcast, host Briana Whitney read the alleged ransom note aloud, and its contents are horrifying. The note begins with a chilling greeting: "Hello, Savannah. We have your mother, Nancy. She is safe but scared." It then lays out a grim ultimatum: pay a Bitcoin ransom within seven days, or Nancy would be killed.
"She will be held for ransom and once payment is received, she will be released unharmed. We will be holding her for a maximum of seven days. Once payment is received to the Bitcoin address below, she will be released within 12 hours of deposit to a safe drop off location back in Tucson. If the payment is not received by the last deadline on Monday the 9th at 5 p.m., she will be killed. Your mother is aware of this and her life is in your hands," the note allegedly read, according to Page Six.
The note also warned against involving law enforcement: "It is in the best interest of everyone to have this completed as soon as possible. You will not be able to contact me from here on out. There will be no negotiation. Do not play games. Law enforcement will not be able to help you."
The pressure on Savannah must have been unbearable. In a heartbreaking interview with CNN in April, she revealed that she blames herself for the terrifying situation. "I don’t know that it’s because she’s my mom, and somebody thought, 'That lady has money, we could make a quick buck.' I mean that would make sense, but we don’t know, but yeah that’s probably [why]," she said. "Which is too much to bear, to think that I brought this to her bedside, that it’s because of me. I just say, I’m so sorry mommy. I’m so sorry. … If it is me, I’m so sorry."
