The sports world is reeling after a tragic turn of events involving Arizona Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell. His mother, 71-year-old Nateal Campbell, was found dead in her home on Tuesday, and authorities have charged her son—Calais's brother—with murder.
According to WSB-TV in Atlanta, police conducted a welfare check at the Campbell residence and discovered Nateal Campbell unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The Campbell family quickly released a statement expressing their devastation.
“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell,” the statement read. “While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”
The investigation took a shocking turn when Ciarre Campbell, another of Nateal's sons, was booked into Fulton County Jail on Wednesday morning. He faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife. Authorities revealed that there had been previous incidents at the home, including a possible arson in April and indications of mental health issues with an individual.
“A brief look into the history does show some calls back in April dealing with this location a possible arson incident,” said Lt. Christapher Butler. “There have been some indications of possible some mental health issues with an individual.”
WSB-TV investigative reporter Mark Winne reported that the arrest warrants accuse Ciarre Campbell of cutting his mother’s neck. Defense attorney Jay Abt quickly responded, “We vigorously protest his innocence. We look forward to his day in court. I’m honored to defend him and, most importantly, the Campbell family, I’m asking on their behalf that the public respect their privacy at this time.”
The case echoes other recent tragedies in the sports world, such as the murder trial of a former Titans scout and the death penalty case against ex-Chiefs linebacker Darron Lee. It also brings to mind the unexpected death of former NCAA volleyball star Summer Nash.
Calais Campbell, a two-time Pro Bowler and former Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, has not made a public statement. The Cardinals organization has offered its support to the grieving family. As the legal process unfolds, the community is left to grapple with the devastating loss of a beloved mother and the shocking accusations against her son.
We will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
