The Indiana Fever rolled past the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday night, but the big story wasn't just Caitlin Clark's dominant stat line—it's that she's now one technical foul away from an automatic one-game suspension from the WNBA.
Clark finished with 27 points and 11 assists in the Fever's 123-88 victory, but a late-game exchange with Sun guard Saniya Rivers landed both players with technical fouls. After Clark tossed the ball to an official, she and Rivers jawed at each other, and the officiating crew decided to hand out double techs.
“She said she was locking me up, so I said, ‘Scoreboard,’ and the ref didn’t like that,” Clark told reporters after the game. “I’m never going to back down. I think just continue to try to control your emotions the best you can. That intensity and that fire is what makes me me, but also knowing my team needs me and finding a good balance of that. But I don’t think I’m going to be playing with that in the back of my head.”
The technical foul was Clark's seventh of the season, which means the next one will trigger an automatic one-game suspension. For now, she'll be fined $1,000 for this latest infraction.
Fever fans love Clark's competitive fire, but the looming suspension is a real concern. When asked if Clark needs to be more careful, head coach Stephanie White laughed off the idea of a strategic approach.
“Anybody who thinks that I have a plan to be strategic about technical fouls is crazy,” White said. “I mean, look, she’s just got to pick and choose, right? She’s got to pick and choose, and it’s every two after that. So I think the biggest thing is she knows, she has awareness about it. We’ll try to help her when we can, but sometimes we can’t. And if she wants to be strategic about which game she doesn’t want to play, then she’ll let her fly.”
Clark's situation has reignited debate about how officials handle the league's biggest star. Some argue she's being targeted, while others say she needs to learn to control her emotions.
The Fever's next game is July 28 against the Seattle Storm. One more technical foul before the playoffs could sideline Clark for a critical contest, but if her coach's comments are any indication, she's not about to tone it down.
