For months, Deion Sanders has been vocal about one thing: the Cleveland Browns never reached out to him to talk about his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Now, with a new head coach in town, that could finally change.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Browns head coach Todd Monken made it clear he's ready to sit down with the Hall of Famer. “I’m open anytime he wants to meet,” Monken said, via ESPN. “I really am looking forward to it. I got a ton of respect for him, and I got a ton of respect for Shedeur because all he has done since I’ve been here is work. That’s all he has done is compete.”
The invitation comes after Deion Sanders, head coach at Colorado, expressed frustration that the Browns never consulted him before or after drafting his son. In an appearance on The Barbershop, Coach Prime said, “I want to meet him because I think it’s vital that as a coach, not the dad, I can tell him a few things about [Shedeur], how to get him going. That wasn’t asked of me a year ago. I don’t understand it.”
He also pointed out that the Jacksonville Jaguars never sought his insight on Travis Hunter, another former Colorado star. “Even a guy like Travis Hunter being drafted to Jacksonville, and I’ve had him for the last three [years], don’t you think you would want to talk to me to ask me what gets him going and what backs him off?”
Shedeur Sanders entered the NFL as a mid-round prospect but quickly climbed the depth chart. By midseason, he was starting games and showing flashes of promise. With the Browns moving on from Kevin Stefanski and bringing in Monken—a coach known for developing quarterbacks—the timing feels right for this conversation.
Monken's reputation as one of the league's top quarterback developers precedes him. Over the past decade, he's helped mold several signal-callers into productive starters. Now, he's eager to see what Shedeur can become under his guidance. “All he has done is compete,” Monken reiterated, signaling his belief in the young quarterback's work ethic.
This meeting could be pivotal for the Browns' future at the position. While the team has invested heavily in other quarterbacks, Shedeur's emergence has added a new dynamic to the roster. The Browns' front office has also made waves this offseason with moves like the blockbuster trade of Myles Garrett, signaling a shift in the franchise's direction.
Meanwhile, Deion Sanders has been a lightning rod for controversy, including recent headlines about his son Shilo's financial troubles. But when it comes to Shedeur, the elder Sanders remains focused on football. He believes his insight could help the Browns unlock his son's full potential.
No date has been set for the meeting, but both sides seem willing. For now, Browns fans can only wait and wonder: will this sit-down between Coach Prime and Coach Monken be the spark that elevates Shedeur Sanders to the next level?
