The NFL world was rocked Monday when the Cleveland Browns agreed to send reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Jared Verse and a package of draft picks. The move, which brings the all-time single-season sack king to a team that was just a whisker away from the Super Bowl last year, left fans and analysts scrambling for answers.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry addressed the trade Tuesday, admitting that shipping Garrett was never part of his offseason blueprint. But when the Rams came calling, Berry realized the deal was simply too good to ignore—for the franchise’s present and future.

Berry: 'Opportunity Was Too Great'

“In terms of the ‘why now,’ the opportunity was too great,” Berry told reporters. “It wasn’t like a ‘Plan A’ going into the offseason. Quite honestly, we would have operated differently if it was. Sometimes things come across your path that you’re not expecting. You can’t be so dogmatic in your strategy and planning that you can’t adjust and be flexible.”

Berry emphasized that the inclusion of Jared Verse in the return was “incredibly important.” The Ohio-born pass rusher, a former Defensive Rookie of the Year and two-time Pro Bowler, is viewed as a perfect scheme fit for Cleveland’s attacking front.

Verse: A 'Perfect Fit' for Cleveland's Defense

“Jared Verse, he’s obviously a huge part of this return for us,” Berry shared. “Jared is an outstanding football player. Former Defensive Rookie of the Year, two-time original ballot Pro Bowler, he’s a perfect DNA match for our attacking front.”

Berry went on to describe Verse as a “terror in both phases, both as a run defender and a pass rusher.” The GM added, “He allows us to continue to play defense at a high level, which has been our standard over the past several seasons. And we’re really excited to welcome him to the organization.”

“Usually when you make these trades, you’re completely trading off present for future,” Berry concluded. “And to get a player like Jared in the deal where the defense still maintains its excellence, that was really attractive to us. … He’s a perfect fit as an edge rusher for our defense.”

The trade has drawn widespread praise from NFL analysts, who see the haul as a rare win-win for both sides. While saying goodbye to a generational talent like Garrett is never easy, the return—headlined by a young star and future picks—gives Cleveland a chance to reload without sacrificing its defensive identity.

For Browns fans, the message is clear: this wasn’t a move the franchise sought out, but one it couldn’t afford to turn down.
