Sometimes, a string of laughing emojis says more than a thousand words. That was the case on Wednesday when former Lakers star Anthony Davis reacted to general manager Rob Pelinka's aggressive free agency moves following LeBron James' departure.
After trading LeBron to the Washington Wizards earlier this week, Pelinka didn't waste time. He swung a deal for Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler, sending two unprotected first-round picks and two pick swaps to Danny Ainge. Then he locked Kessler up with a four-year, $130 million extension. On top of that, LA added Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton, and Sandro Mamukelashvili in free agency.
The spending spree caught the eye of a fan on X, who called out the double standard. "Anthony Davis practically begged Rob Pelinka to get him a CENTER alongside him for YEARS… Rob didn’t budge," the user wrote. "AD got back doored.. Bron lowkey got back doored.. and NOW he wanna be a competent GM now that the duo that won you a championship is gone.. you can’t make this (expletive) up LOL."
Davis, a 10-time All-Star, responded with a flurry of laughing emojis, making it clear he found the irony amusing. The reaction comes as the Lakers pivot to building around Luka Doncic, who they acquired earlier this year.
The contrast is stark. During Davis' tenure, Pelinka was often criticized for not adding a traditional center to pair with him. Now, with LeBron and AD out of the picture, the front office is suddenly willing to part with future picks and hand out a massive extension to a big man. Davis' emoji-laden response suggests he feels the front office didn't go to bat for him the same way.
Meanwhile, LeBron James had a more gracious exit. Lakers president Jeanie Buss issued a statement thanking LeBron for his eight years with the team, including the 2020 championship. LeBron responded with his own heartfelt message, saying, "No, THANK YOU! Truly a honor to wear the purple and gold while trying to continuing the greatness & legacies that came before me!"
As for Davis' future, the Wizards have reportedly said they're not willing to entertain trades for him. LeBron, meanwhile, is rumored to be leaning toward joining Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Miami Heat if a blockbuster move to Golden State falls through.
For now, Lakers fans are left wondering what could have been if Pelinka had shown this kind of aggression earlier. And Davis is just sitting back, laughing at the irony.
