The Kansas City Chiefs' rough patch continued Sunday with a heartbreaking 24-23 loss to the Denver Broncos, a game that slipped away in the final seconds amid a controversial officiating call.
With the Chiefs driving to Denver's one-yard line in the closing moments, Patrick Mahomes connected with Rashee Rice on a 4th-and-goal pass that appeared to give Kansas City the go-ahead score. But the play was nullified by a false start penalty on right tackle Jaylon Moore, pushing the ball back to the six-yard line. On the next snap, Mahomes was sacked, and the game ended.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid didn't hold back his disagreement with the call during his postgame press conference.
“I didn’t see it,” Reid said with a chuckle. “That’s one man’s opinion. I saw him move his head, but I didn’t see a false start.”
Moore, the player flagged, also expressed uncertainty about the penalty.
“I mean I’ve got to go back and look at it, still haven’t got a chance to look at it,” Moore said. “But regardless, I’ve just got to be better.”
The loss was the Chiefs' second straight after a 5-0 start, and it dropped them to second place in the AFC West. They had controlled much of the game, holding a 24-13 lead entering the fourth quarter before the Broncos rallied.
Reid's frustration echoes a growing sentiment among Chiefs fans who are questioning the team's recent slide, as highlighted in fan reactions to the 0-2 stretch. The schedule doesn't get easier, with matchups against the Jets, Falcons, and Cardinals on the horizon.
Despite the setback, Reid remained focused on the positives, noting the team's resilience and the strong effort from Mahomes and the offense. But the sting of a game decided by a penalty he didn't see will linger.
“We had our chances,” Reid said. “We just didn't finish.”
The Chiefs will look to bounce back next week, hoping to put the controversy behind them and regain their winning form.
