The Seattle Seahawks are on the market, and the rumor mill is churning with tech billionaires' names. But when it comes to Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook, the story is anything but clear.
Fresh off a Super Bowl victory, the NFC West franchise could fetch a staggering $10 billion or more. That price tag has attracted plenty of buzz, including whispers that Facebook founder Zuckerberg and Apple CEO Cook might be in the mix. But depending on who you ask, those whispers are either true or way off base.
Two Very Different Reports
Front Office Sports dropped a bombshell Thursday, reporting that five sources had heard Zuckerberg was considering a bid, while four said Cook was weighing an offer. The report suggested both tech titans were among the potential bidders for the Seahawks.
But almost immediately, Puck's Dylan Byers pushed back hard. Byers reported that Zuckerberg and Cook are not interested in owning the team themselves. Instead, he said, they might be passive investors in a fund that's bidding for the franchise — a very different scenario.
“Mark Zuckerberg isn’t considering a bid for the Seahawks. … He may be invested in a fund that’s putting forward a bid… but that’s a very different thing,” Byers reported. He added, “I assume same true for Tim Cook.”
Byers was emphatic: “This isn’t true. Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook are not considering bids for the Seattle Seahawks, per sources close to both men. Period, full stop.”
What's Really Going On?
So which is it? Are two of the world's most famous tech moguls vying for an NFL team, or are they just along for the ride as investors? The conflicting reports have left fans and analysts scratching their heads.
Bloomberg also reported Thursday that neither Zuckerberg nor Cook is interested in buying the team, backing up Byers' version. That adds another layer of confusion to the story.
The Seahawks are expected to shatter the record sale price of $6 billion set by the Washington Commanders. With that kind of money on the line, it's no surprise that rumors are flying — and that every potential bidder is under a microscope.
Fan Reactions and Bigger Picture
This isn't the first time Zuckerberg's name has been linked to the Seahawks. Earlier reports suggested he might be eyeing the team, sparking debate among NFL fans who can't agree on whether he should own the Seahawks. Some see his deep pockets as a plus, while others worry about a tech mogul controlling a beloved franchise.
If Zuckerberg or Cook were to buy the team outright, it would be a massive story — one that would reshape the ownership landscape of the NFL. But if they're only passive investors, the impact is much smaller.
For now, the only thing that's certain is the uncertainty. As the sale process moves forward, expect more reports — and more contradictions — to emerge. The Seahawks' future owner remains a mystery, and the tech world's involvement is far from settled.
Stay tuned: this story is far from over.
