The New York Yankees are out of the playoffs, and their fans are taking the brunt of the criticism for how they handled the final moments of Wednesday night's game.
After the Yankees fell 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 3 of the ALDS, a chorus of disgust erupted on social media over the behavior of the home crowd at Yankee Stadium. Videos captured fans hurling beer cans and other debris onto the field, while others were heard shouting obscenities at Tampa Bay's outfielders.
The tipping point came in the bottom of the sixth inning when rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe appeared to hit a game-tying two-run homer. But the umpires overturned the call after replay review determined that a fan had reached over the outfield wall and interfered with the ball. The play was ruled a one-run double, and the fan was escorted out of the stadium.
MLB's official statement confirmed the decision: "After viewing all relevant angles, the Replay Official definitively determined the spectator interfered with the ball over the field of play. The ball would not have left the playing field nor would it have been caught. The call is OVERTURNED, there was spectator interference and no home run. Additionally, the Replay Official scored one run and placed the batter-runner at second."
The reversal sparked a torrent of anger from the stands, with some fans throwing objects onto the field and delaying the game. The ugly display drew sharp rebukes from across the baseball world.
MLB writer and podcaster Jared Carrabis tweeted: "Worst fans in sports. They deserve every humiliation ritual loss they annually receive." Another fan added: "Worst fan base in the world." One social media user referenced a similar incident from the 1996 ALCS, writing: "A fan base that believes their team is entitled to a home run any time its hitters hit a fly ball within reach of fans in the front row outfield seats."
The loss capped a disappointing postseason for the Yankees, who were swept in the best-of-five series despite high hopes. The team's exit has already sparked talk of a franchise boycott among some fans, while others are pointing fingers at the front office. Aaron Judge has publicly criticized the organization following the sweep, and even Derek Jeter issued a stern warning after Game 1.
For the Rays, the victory sends them to the ALCS for the second straight year, where they'll face either the Cleveland Guardians or Chicago White Sox. Game 4 of that series is scheduled for Thursday evening.
As for the Yankees, the offseason of questions begins now — and the behavior of their fans has only added to the embarrassment. Some are calling for a lifetime ban for the fan who interfered with the play, while others are simply shaking their heads at the latest chapter in a storied rivalry that keeps getting uglier.
