The wrestling world is reeling after beloved star Tanea Brooks, who fans know as Rebel, revealed she has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The 47-year-old shared the devastating news in a heartfelt video message, asking fans to pray for a peaceful journey and a peaceful passing.
Brooks, a familiar face in TNA, Ohio Valley Wrestling, and later All Elite Wrestling (AEW), had already faced a tough battle with primary pulmonary lymphoma five years ago. Now, after nearly two years of searching for answers to her worsening medical issues, doctors at the Mayo Clinic finally confirmed the ALS diagnosis.
“First, I want to say thank you for all of your prayers because, for those who know, it’s been a two-year medical journey trying to find out what is wrong. Finally, our prayers have been answered,” Brooks said via Us Weekly. “The thing is, sometimes we don’t want to hear that answer to our prayers. And so, while I was waiting to have lung surgery for the masses on my lung, the doctors at Mayo finally found what’s going on.”
Brooks’s functions have already begun declining rapidly. She noted that ALS, which has no cure and limited research, explains her trouble walking and talking, and that all her functions will soon decline. She doesn’t know how much time she has left.
The outpouring of support from fellow wrestlers has been overwhelming. WWE legend Torrie Wilson called Brooks an “utter angel” and praised her courageous heart. Former WWE star Chavo Guerrero Jr. thanked her for giving so many people strength. Jade Cargill, D-Von Dudley, and countless others have sent prayers and love.
In a separate but related note, the wrestling world has seen its share of controversy lately, with CM Punk facing fresh accusations in Las Vegas. Yet Brooks’s announcement has united the community in grief and solidarity.
Brooks’s resilience is a testament to her spirit. Even as she faces this cruel disease, she continues to inspire. As one fan wrote, “Rebel fought in the ring; now she’s fighting the hardest battle of all.”
Our hearts go out to Tanea Brooks, her family, and all who love her. We join the wrestling community in hoping for peace and comfort in the days ahead.
