The NFL MVP race just got a whole lot more interesting. After a wild Week 1, the odds have been dramatically reshuffled, and a new name has surged to the forefront.
While Josh Allen remains the favorite to claim his second MVP trophy, a former No. 1 overall pick has quietly (or not so quietly) crashed the party. Caleb Williams, the Chicago Bears' dynamic quarterback, has vaulted into second place in the odds, thanks to a jaw-dropping season opener.
Williams was the triggerman in Chicago's 59-point explosion on the road against the Carolina Panthers, leading the Bears to a resounding victory. His performance was so dominant that it has completely altered the MVP landscape, with oddsmakers taking notice.
ProFootballTalk's Michael David Smith reported the shifting odds: "Allen's odds improved from +600 to +500, while Williams is now just behind Allen at +600. Prior to Week 1, Williams was at +1200." That's a massive leap for the second-year pro, who has clearly stated his case early.
Allen also saw his odds bump slightly after a stellar outing of his own, throwing for 334 yards and four total touchdowns in Buffalo's 36-31 win over the Texans. But it was Williams who made the biggest splash, and the rest of the pack is now scrambling to keep up.
Behind the top two, the odds are a logjam of familiar faces: Lamar Jackson (+650), Joe Burrow (+900), Brock Purdy (+1200), Patrick Mahomes (+1600), Dak Prescott (+1800), and Trevor Lawrence (+1800) all trail. Meanwhile, reigning MVP Matthew Stafford saw his odds slip from +1400 to +2000 after the Rams' ugly loss in Australia.
The Bears' offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, has been vocal about his ambition for this unit: he wants Chicago to be the highest-scoring offense in NFL history. If that vision comes to fruition, Williams' MVP odds will only continue to improve as the weeks roll on.
With such a dramatic shift after just one game, the race is wide open. Can Williams sustain this torrid pace, or will the veterans reassert their dominance? Only time will tell, but for now, the former Heisman winner has everyone's attention.
