MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings are holding their breath after star wide receiver Justin Jefferson exited Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with an ankle injury. Jefferson was seen entering the blue medical tent in the first half and did not return to the field.

Before leaving, Jefferson had hauled in two receptions for 32 yards and moved the chains once. He was in the tent for an extended period, leaving fans at home and in the stands anxious about the severity of the injury. The Vikings later announced on X that he is questionable to return.

The Vikings cannot afford to lose Jefferson for any length of time. He is the centerpiece of their offense and one of the most dominant receivers in the NFL. Since being drafted 22nd overall in 2020, Jefferson has rewritten the record books, including setting Vikings rookie records with 88 catches and 1,400 yards, then following up with 108 receptions for 1,616 yards in 2021.

His 2022 campaign was historic: he led the league with 128 catches and 1,809 yards, earning NFL Offensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Pro honors. Through his first six seasons, he became just the third player in NFL history to record 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first six years.

Through two games of the 2026 season, Jefferson has 590 career receptions for 8,627 yards and 44 touchdowns in 96 games. His trophy case includes four Pro Bowl selections and four AP All-Pro nods, with first-team honors in 2022 and 2024. He also owns league records for receptions and receiving yards through a player's first three seasons, became the fastest to 6,000 receiving yards, and was the fastest to 30 career 100-yard games.

Simply put, Jefferson is nearly impossible to replace. The Vikings will now await further testing to determine the extent of the injury. Head coach Kevin O'Connell is expected to provide an update in his postgame press conference.

In the meantime, the team may need to lean on its depth at receiver, but no one can replicate Jefferson's production. For a Vikings squad with playoff aspirations, a significant injury to their superstar would be a devastating blow. Fans will be hoping for good news in the coming days.

As the Vikings await word on Jefferson, the rest of the NFL is dealing with its own injury drama. The Giants are scrambling after Jaxson Dart's injury, while the Chargers are shoring up their offensive line to protect Justin Herbert. In Los Angeles, the Lakers are mourning a broadcasting legend. But in Minnesota, all eyes are on Jefferson's ankle.
