After four decades of delivering forecasts, a beloved Indiana weatherman was shown the door without a chance to say goodbye to the viewers who had become like family.

Jesse Walker, the chief meteorologist at Terre Haute's WTWO, had publicly announced on October 2 his intention to leave the station and launch a new venture with former colleague Alex Kerkhove, according to industry newsletter FTVLive. But before he could craft a proper send-off, the station made the call to let him go immediately, denying him the opportunity to address his audience one last time.

Soap Opera Fans Devastated as Beloved Star Dies Unexpectedly at 62
Robert Kelker-Kelly, the actor who brought Bo Brady to life on 'Days of Our Lives,' has passed away at 62. The soap opera community is in mourning.

Word of the abrupt dismissal spread quickly, and Kerkhove took to social media to express her dismay. "Today they walked you out the door and didn’t let you say goodbye," she wrote, capturing the sentiment of many who had followed Walker's career.

In a heartfelt tribute, Kerkhove praised Walker's dedication and mentorship. "Jesse Walker! I am sorry that the station treated someone that has dedicated his entire career to serving a community like they did," she posted on Facebook. "I’m forever grateful for your mentorship and support as a meteorologist and also as a friend. You’ll always be my 'station dad' — someone who always looked out for me."

She added, "Sorry leaving wasn’t on your terms, but your legacy as the chief meteorologist is something they can never take away."

Nexstar, the parent company of WTWO, issued a statement to The New York Post, offering a different perspective. "Several weeks ago, Jesse Walker asked to be released from his contract with WTWO, and WTWO decided to honor Jesse’s request," a spokesperson said. "Prior to his departure last week, WTWO internally celebrated Jesse’s achievements and contributions to the community and worked with him to produce an on-air video tribute which aired Sept. 30 and is now on the WTWO website."

The statement also addressed Kerkhove's status: "WTWO-TV did not terminate the employment of Alex Kerkhove and repeatedly asked her to return to work. She chose not to do so. As this is a personnel matter, we will have no further comment."

The situation echoes other high-profile ousters in the sports world, where athletes and coaches have been let go under similar circumstances. For instance, a coach fired after a rant and a broadcaster's candid thoughts on being dismissed show that abrupt endings are not uncommon.

Walker's exit marks the end of an era for WTWO, where he had become a trusted face for generations of viewers. His departure without a proper farewell has left many in the community feeling cheated, as they never got to thank him for his years of service.

As Walker moves on to his next chapter, the legacy of his work remains, even if the goodbye was not what he — or his audience — deserved.
