The United States men's national team is heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a captain that has plenty of miles on the odometer—and a fanbase that's not exactly thrilled about it.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino dropped his World Cup roster on Saturday, and while some selections raised eyebrows, it was his choice for the captain's armband that really got people talking. Longtime defender Tim Ream, 38, will lead the squad. That makes him the oldest player on the team by a wide margin—starting goalkeeper Matt Turner won't even turn 32 until the tournament is underway.
Ream brings serious experience to the role. With 80 caps, he's second only to Christian Pulisic in appearances for the USMNT. He spent 13 seasons in England, suiting up for Bolton Wanderers and Fulham between 2012 and 2024, and now plays for Charlotte FC in MLS. This is his 17th professional season. But for many fans, that experience comes with a glaring downside: his legs have seen a lot of action.
The concern is simple: can a 38-year-old center-back keep up with the blistering pace of international soccer's elite attackers? Critics worry that Ream's lack of speed will turn him into a liability, especially as a captain expected to log heavy minutes. The backlash was immediate and loud on social media.
“Tyler Adams is and always has been the rightful captain. This is beyond dumb,” one fan posted. Another wrote: “Of course we let the 40 year old pushin unc to captain this team than having Tyler Adams again but classic Poch I guess.” A third simply declared: “If Ream starts we are cooked. Should’ve been Tyler Adams.”
Adams wore the armband during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and is seen by many as the natural leader for this generation. But Pochettino went in a different direction, and the decision has only added to a growing sense of unease around the team. Questions about Pochettino's commitment to the program have already been swirling, and this captaincy call feels like another crack in the foundation.
Some fans are holding out hope that Ream might wear the armband mostly from the bench, but that seems unlikely given his stature and Pochettino's trust in him. Others are simply bracing for the worst. “This is a CRAP decision by Poch. I really hope I’m wrong but Ream will be a liability and will get done for pace,” one user wrote. Another added: “This is stupid. I get having him on the roster for leadership purposes or whatever I guess but he should NOT be starting.”
The controversy over the captaincy is just the latest chapter in what's shaping up to be a turbulent run-up to the World Cup. Between lingering injuries, Pochettino's impending departure after the tournament, and now a roster that has fans scratching their heads, expectations are sinking fast. Even the off-field drama involving broadcast rights has added to the noise.
Will Tim Ream prove the doubters wrong and lead the USMNT to a deep run? Or will his age become the story that defines this team's World Cup? One thing is certain: the pressure is on, and the clock is ticking.
