The 2026 NBA Finals are shaping up to be a spectacle both on and off the court. According to a report from The New York Times, President Donald Trump is planning to make an appearance at a Finals game at Madison Square Garden, adding a layer of political intrigue to the championship series.
Trump has already attended a Super Bowl since returning to office in 2025, and now it seems he's setting his sights on basketball's biggest stage. The president's potential visit isn't just about the game—it's personal. He's openly rooting for the New York Knicks, a team that secured its Finals spot by sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals.
A Sweep That Changed Plans
Zolan Kanno-Youngs and Tyler Pager of The New York Times reported that Trump had initially planned a surprise appearance at Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals on Wednesday, if the Knicks had lost Game 4 on Monday. But after New York completed the sweep, the president shifted his focus to the NBA championship.
“If the Knicks had lost Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals on Monday, Mr. Trump had planned to make a surprise appearance among the team’s faithful at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, according to three people familiar with the planning,” the reporters wrote. “But after the Knicks completed a sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday, the president is turning to the NBA championship.”
The Knicks haven't lost a game since April 23, a streak that has energized a fanbase that has waited decades for a title. The team's dominance has also driven up demand, with Knicks finals tickets costing more than a house, sparking debate about whether the price is worth it.
Rooting for the Home Team
Trump's allegiance is no secret. In a recent interview with Sid Rosenberg of 77 WABC, the president confirmed his support for the Knicks, praising team owner Jim Dolan and the players.
“I get along with Jim Dolan, I think he’s a really good guy,” Trump said. “Boy, some of these players have turned out to be great players. Philadelphia is a tough team – their center [Joel] Embiid is a big guy – and you thought those games would be good, but they were winning by 35 points. I really like Jim Dolan a lot. I’m really happy for him and the team.”
The Knicks' run has already prompted MSG to shift a concert date to accommodate the Finals, underscoring the excitement surrounding the team.
Awaiting the Opponent
While the Knicks have punched their ticket, the Western Conference representative is still undecided. The Oklahoma City Thunder are one win away from clinching the conference title, facing the San Antonio Spurs in Game 6 on Thursday. If the Thunder advance, it will set up a compelling Finals matchup between two young, hungry teams.
Regardless of the opponent, Trump's presence at the Garden would mark a historic moment, blending sports and politics in a way that only the NBA Finals can deliver. For now, the basketball world waits to see if the president will be cheering courtside as the Knicks chase their first championship in over 50 years.
