The college sports world is in mourning after a promising young athlete was lost far too soon. Graycen Vargo, a 21-year-old distance runner for Texas A&M University-Texarkana, died Friday following a sudden medical emergency at a track meet in New Orleans.
Vargo collapsed at the Red River Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships, hosted by Xavier University. Medical personnel on site provided immediate care before rushing him to a hospital, but despite their efforts, he could not be saved.
The junior computer science major from Dallas, Texas, was a respected member of both the cross country and track & field teams. Just recently, he had been honored with the Eagle Excellence Award for Cross Country, a testament to his dedication and skill.
“Our thoughts are with Graycen’s family, teammates, and friends as they deal with this unimaginable loss,” said Texas A&M-Texarkana President Dr. Ross Alexander in a statement. “Graycen was a respected member of the student body and a beloved member of the Cross Country and Track and Field Teams. His presence will be greatly missed by the entire university community.”
Athletic Director Ryan Wall echoed that sentiment, adding, “On behalf of the Eagle athletic department, I want to convey our heartfelt sorrow at the loss of Graycen Vargo. Our prayers are with the Vargo family and everyone who knew Graycen as they go through this difficult time.”
The sudden death of a young athlete is a tragedy that resonates far beyond one campus. It brings back painful memories of other recent losses in the sports world, such as the Ohio high school baseball star, 16, who died suddenly after a game and the Arizona State football program reeling after the sudden loss of 29-year-old coach Steven Miller. These incidents remind us of the fragility of life.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding Vargo’s collapse and death is currently underway. No further details about the cause have been released at this time.
Vargo was known not just as an athlete but as a dedicated student in the demanding field of computer science. His loss leaves a void in the classroom as well as on the track.
The Texas A&M-Texarkana community is planning memorial services to honor Vargo’s life and legacy. Grief counselors are being made available to students and staff struggling with the news.
In times like these, the sports world comes together to support one another. Vargo’s teammates, classmates, and coaches are leaning on each other as they navigate this heartbreaking loss. May he rest in peace.
