Tom Brady is no stranger to taking hits on the field, but his latest verbal jab off it has sparked a heated debate. During the Netflix Roast of Kevin Hart on Sunday night, the seven-time Super Bowl winner fired off a joke about Hart's cheating scandal that many are calling a low blow.
The roast, part of Netflix's month-long comedy lineup, was a no-holds-barred affair. Brady, who was himself roasted by Netflix earlier this year, took the stage early and didn't waste any time. He referenced Hart's admitted infidelity during his wife's pregnancy with a pointed quip.
“I do have a few words for you before I return to my affairs in Las Vegas,” Brady said. “Oh wait, I’m talking about affairs in Las Vegas. Was that off? Not supposed to talk about affairs in Vegas? I think I broke another rule. [Expletive] it. I talked about it.”
The line was a clear retort to Hart's own brutal roast of Brady earlier in the night. Hart had taken aim at Brady's divorce from Gisele Bündchen, joking, “You sometimes got to [expletive] your coach. You know who else [expletive] their coach? Gisele. She [expletive] that karate man.” Hart also mocked Brady for missing the signs, saying, “One of the smartest quarterbacks ever played a game. How did you not see this coming? Eight [expletive] karate classes a day.”
But Brady's joke about Hart's affair has drawn particular criticism. Many viewers and commentators feel the quarterback crossed a line by bringing up a painful chapter in Hart's marriage. The moment has echoes of the recent controversy over targeting in preseason games, where intent and impact are fiercely debated.
Interestingly, Brady has admitted in the past that he regrets some of the jokes made about his own family during his Netflix roast. On the “IMPAULSIVE” podcast with Logan Paul, he recalled, “It was tough on my kids for sure. They’re protective of their mom, of their dad, of everybody. They (were) just like, ‘What was the point of that? Why did you do that?'”
Despite that experience, Brady doubled down on Sunday night, delivering the affair joke without hesitation. The move has left some wondering if he's learned from his own past, especially given how his appearance at the WNBA opener was all about lighthearted fun.
