The Las Vegas Raiders officially have their quarterback of the future—and he's already gotten a reality check from the greatest to ever play the position.

Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy-winning signal-caller from Indiana, was selected first overall by the Raiders in the 2026 NFL Draft. While the pick was widely expected, the message he received from minority owner Tom Brady after the selection was anything but predictable.

Brady took to social media to welcome Mendoza and the rest of the rookie class, but his words carried the weight of someone who knows exactly what it takes to win at the highest level.

“Congratulations to all the rookies who are joining the NFL this weekend. I hope you can appreciate this special moment… you’ve earned it through hard work, discipline, and determination. You’ve made your family proud, along with everyone else on your journey that has supported you,” Brady wrote. “But this is just the beginning. When you wake up tomorrow morning, just know that your career will be defined by what happens going forward. You’ll need to take everything you do to the next level in order to compete with the world’s best. Welcome to Las Vegas @fernandomendoza. Time to get to work.”

That wasn’t the only piece of advice Mendoza received from the seven-time Super Bowl champion. During Mendoza’s top-30 visit with the Raiders, Brady gave him a blunt preview of what life in Las Vegas will be like.

“It was fantastic,” Mendoza said. “He gave me the message that he’s going to push me, and he’s not going to be all lovey-dovey.”

That message fits perfectly with the expectations surrounding Mendoza, who dominated college football in 2025 with 3,535 passing yards and 41 touchdowns. The Raiders are betting their future on his arm, and Brady’s hands-on approach as an owner suggests he’ll be deeply involved in Mendoza’s development.

Mendoza didn’t attend the draft in Pittsburgh, but he spoke with ESPN after being selected and expressed his excitement about joining the Raiders.

“What a great organization, great legacy,” Mendoza said. “There’s so many teammates I’m looking forward to talking to — coaches, owners. I’m ecstatic for the opportunity.”

While Brady’s message was direct, it’s also a sign of how invested he is in the Raiders’ future. Russini's Timely Tom Brady Scoop Raises Eyebrows After Vrabel Encounter shows that Brady’s influence in the organization is only growing. And with Mendoza now in the fold, the Raiders have a young star who can learn from the best.

Mendoza’s intelligence is well-documented—Fernando Mendoza's 4.7 GPA Surfaces Just Hours Before NFL Draft—so he should have no trouble absorbing Brady’s lessons. But as Brady made clear, the hard work is just beginning.

For Raiders fans, the combination of Mendoza’s talent and Brady’s mentorship is a dream scenario. If Mendoza can handle the pressure and the push from his Hall of Fame owner, Las Vegas might finally have the franchise quarterback it’s been searching for.
