The Texas Tech softball program received a scare this week when three of its players were injured in a jet ski accident during a team outing. The incident occurred Thursday afternoon at Lake Ransom Canyon, just outside of Lubbock, and while it could have been far worse, the Red Raiders are counting their blessings.
According to a university spokesperson, the accident happened as part of a team-building event. Fortunately, none of the injuries were critical. All three student-athletes received medical treatment and are expected to make a full recovery.
“Texas Tech Athletics can confirm members of its softball program were involved in an accident Thursday afternoon at Lake Ransom Canyon outside of Lubbock as part of a team event,” the spokesperson said. “There were thankfully no critical injuries as a result of the accident. All injured student-athletes have been treated and are expected to make a full recovery.”
Local outlet KAMC reported that the injuries were to the players' legs or hands. One player was transported via ambulance to University Medical Center, though the names of those involved have not been released by the university.
Head coach Gerry Glasco took to social media to express his relief and gratitude. “Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers,” he wrote. “Glad everyone is okay and recovering well!”
The accident casts a momentary shadow over a program that has become a national powerhouse under Glasco's leadership. The Red Raiders have reached the Women's College World Series championship series in each of the past two seasons, though they fell short both times.
