Terrell Owens has never been one to mince words, and the Hall of Fame receiver is taking direct aim at the man in charge of the Dallas Cowboys. On the latest episode of his “Get to the Point” podcast, Owens didn’t hold back, calling for owner Jerry Jones to step aside and let someone else run the show.
According to Owens, Jones is more interested in being the center of attention than hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. “He’s selling them a fantasy, he’s selling them a dream,” Owens said. “Jerry, I cannot deny, he is a great salesman. He needs to relinquish some of the control that he has with the team and allow some other people to step in place.”
The former Cowboys star went even further, comparing Jones to a certain former president. “He’s just like Donald Trump — he’ll just say anything, and a lot of people are eating it up and think it’s going to be true. Stop it.”
Owens argues that Jones’ refusal to consider selling the team is a clear sign of narcissism. “At the end of the day, he’s not worried about wins and losses,” Owens said. “Fans out there, it’s not about wins and losses for him. It’s about the bottom line and the bottom dollar.”
The Cowboys remain one of the most valuable franchises in sports, with Forbes recently valuing the team at a staggering $17 billion. That figure is unlikely to drop anytime soon, especially with the monster ratings from the season opener against the Giants proving the brand’s enduring appeal.
Owens believes that as long as fans keep buying merchandise and holding onto hope, Jones has no incentive to change. “As long as you guys keep buying Dallas Cowboy merch, he’s raking in dollars. As long as he’s putting a decent product on the field and giving you guys hope that every year is the year, you guys keep buying it.”
The Cowboys’ recent on-field struggles only add fuel to the fire. After a disappointing Week 1 loss, fans are already questioning the direction of the team. Some are even calling for a blockbuster trade to shake things up, but Owens insists the real problem starts at the top.
Jones has never hidden his love for the spotlight, often boasting about the Cowboys being the most talked-about franchise in sports. While he’d certainly welcome a Super Bowl, Owens suggests that Jones prioritizes headlines over hardware.
Whether Jones will ever heed Owens’ advice remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the criticism from a franchise legend won’t be easy to ignore.
