Just weeks ago, Tampa Bay was buzzing. Baker Mayfield had inked a lucrative extension, the roster looked stout, and the sting of losing a fifth straight division crown felt like ancient history. Fast forward to now, and the Buccaneers are staring at an 0-2 hole after a season-opening loss to Cincinnati and a shocking home defeat to Cleveland.

Unsurprisingly, the atmosphere around the team is anything but sunny. Hall of Fame cornerback Ronde Barber didn't mince words on his WFLA radio show, saying the team simply isn't ready to compete. He compared their first two games to preseason extensions, noting a glaring lack of urgency and execution.

Mahomes Praises Crosby as Chiefs-Raiders Rivalry Heats Up
Patrick Mahomes and Maxx Crosby share mutual respect ahead of their Week 4 clash, with Mahomes praising Crosby's competitiveness and drive.

"Look, the mood is not great," Barber said. "There’s too many mistakes. There’s a lack of urgency, if you will, in my mind when I look at them going onto the field. There’s got to be a little bit of a sense of a defining characteristic of your team through Week 2. I don’t know what that is. It’s mistakes. It’s busts. It’s lack of execution. Week 2 can’t be the fifth preseason game. At some point you have to start hitting your stride. And it doesn’t feel like they’re in their stride right now on either side of the ball."

The heat is squarely on head coach Todd Bowles. Already unpopular among the fanbase, he barely survived an offseason that followed a 7-of-9 collapse and another playoff miss. With Mayfield now commanding a hefty paycheck, Bowles is widely viewed as the fall guy if things don't turn around quickly.

Sunday's matchup with the Minnesota Vikings is now a de facto must-win. Fall to 0-3, and the Buccaneers' playoff hopes essentially vanish. History is brutally clear: Tampa Bay has missed the postseason in 10 straight seasons when starting 0-3, and they've never made it in a non-strike year with that record.

For Mayfield, the sting is personal. His painful homecoming against the Browns only magnified the frustration, and he knows the margin for error is gone. The offense has sputtered, the defense has busted assignments, and the sense of urgency Barber demands is nowhere to be found.

If the ship isn't righted soon, the mood in Tampa will only get darker. Bowles, Mayfield, and the rest of the Bucs are officially on the clock.
