Jayden Daniels has gone from LSU legend to the internet's favorite punching bag, and the latest jab comes from an unexpected corner: StubHub.
The Washington Commanders quarterback, who led the Tigers to glory with a Heisman-winning season in 2023, is now at odds with his alma mater over the fate of his No. 5 jersey. LSU recently gave that number to cornerback DJ Pickett, and Daniels' camp is not happy about it.
“The Daniels family is deeply disappointed and feels profoundly disrespected by LSU’s decision to give Jayden’s number to another player,” a spokesperson said. “Jayden and his family had every reason to believe that his number would remain a meaningful part of his LSU legacy and would be honored and protected in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the university.”
While some might sympathize with the sentiment, the sports world has largely mocked the outcry. StubHub, never one to miss a chance for a viral moment, jumped into the fray with a savage post on X (formerly Twitter).
“Effective immediately, we will no longer offer tickets in groups of 5. Out of respect for Jayden Daniels, we’re only doing 4 or 6+. Thank you for your understanding,” the company tweeted, alongside a screenshot of Commanders ticket options.
The joke exploded, racking up over 4.2 million views in less than a day. Fans and even NFL players couldn't resist piling on, with some comparing the situation to Joe Burrow's recent comments on the matter.
But how did we get here? According to LSU coach Lane Kiffin, the No. 5 jersey was promised to Pickett during his recruitment. Kiffin said he had no choice but to honor that commitment, even if it meant stepping on Daniels' toes.
“DJ is in [No.] 5, and that was a situation that was promised to him in recruiting here, for him to sign here,” Kiffin explained. “I’ve done a lot of research on that with the family and the representatives and the people, so really I didn’t have a decision to make. It was promised to the kid. It wasn’t done for whatever [reason]. I’m not going to get into that. I’m not going to judge something [that was done] when I wasn’t here. But when a kid is promised something to come to a school, he should wear it. So at that point, I don’t think that’s really my decision. We should honor what he was told.”
Daniels' camp, however, isn't backing down. The situation has escalated to the point where some are calling it a bigger problem for the young quarterback's image. Others, like RG3, have slammed the move as a colossal mistake.
Even Daniels' mom has been accused of fueling the feud, and the drama shows no signs of cooling off. Meanwhile, the Commanders are dealing with their own issues, including a major injury to left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
For now, the internet is having a field day at Daniels' expense. Whether this jersey dispute gets resolved or becomes a permanent stain on his legacy remains to be seen. But one thing's for sure: StubHub's troll job will go down in the annals of sports social media history.
