Verrett's return comes just over a year after he parted ways with ESPN in May 2025 when the network closed its Los Angeles studio. At the time, he explained the decision was personal, not professional. "The L.A. studio was closing and so it just didn't make sense for me to go back to Bristol in terms of where my life is right now," Verrett said. "For me, it wasn't a career decision. It was a life decision. Even if there had been a renewal, that call for me to move back to Bristol, that's not something I was interested in. It was totally amicable. There's certainly no hard feelings on my end. I don't think there are on their end."
Now, with NFL Network's operations shifting and the league's media landscape evolving, Verrett is ready to dive back into pro football coverage—a passion he's held since joining ESPN in 2000. "When I joined @espn in 2000, one of my goals was to be a part of its NFL coverage," he wrote on X. "Always enjoyed covering everything on @SportsCenter but pro football remained my passion. Here we are all these years later, and I can't wait to get started."
His new role will put him at the center of daily NFL discussions, analyzing matchups, breaking down storylines, and interviewing the league's biggest names. Adding to his busy fall, Verrett is also continuing his work with the New Orleans Saints. The team hired him in 2025 to host their pregame show, a role he'll maintain alongside his national duties.
