Stan Kroenke just added another jewel to his already glittering sports crown. On Tuesday, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment announced it had acquired controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels from the Moreno family, a deal expected to close in the first quarter of 2027. The move brings Kroenke's total team count to seven and makes him an owner in every major men's professional sports league in North America.
“The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market,” Kroenke said in a joint statement. “We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”
With this purchase, Kroenke now owns the Los Angeles Rams (NFL), Denver Nuggets (NBA), Colorado Avalanche (NHL), Colorado Rapids (MLS), Colorado Mammoth (NLL), Arsenal Football Club (Premier League), and now the Angels. It's a portfolio that spans continents and sports, and it's not just about quantity—his teams have been winning. The Rams, Nuggets, and Avalanche all captured championships in 2022 or 2023, and Arsenal ended a 22-year Premier League title drought in May. The Rapids also lifted the MLS Cup back in 2010.
But the Angels are a different kind of challenge. They haven't made the playoffs since 2014 and haven't won a postseason game since 2009. Currently sitting at 53-85, they're on pace for one of the worst seasons in franchise history. Despite having two of the game's biggest stars in Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout, the team never managed a winning record during Ohtani's six-year tenure, and Trout's brilliance has been largely wasted. The franchise has also been weighed down by massive contracts, like Albert Pujols' $240 million deal and Anthony Rendon's $245 million albatross, which finally comes off the books.
Kroenke inherits a team in need of a fresh start, and he has a track record of turning things around. His ownership group has shown a willingness to invest and a knack for building winners. The Angels' new chapter begins with a clean slate, and fans in Anaheim are hoping Kroenke's Midas touch extends to the diamond.
The sale price? At least $3.9 billion, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. Moreno bought the team for $183.5 million in 2003, a year after they won the World Series. “The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years,” Moreno said. “We believe with KSE's experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise.”
Kroenke's empire now spans the globe, and with the Angels in the fold, he's got a presence in every major league. It's a staggering level of influence that few can match. As he adds yet another franchise to his collection, one has to wonder: is there any team he wouldn't buy?
