The basketball world is raising a toast to love. Legendary NBA head coach Gregg Popovich is officially a married man once again. The 77-year-old, who led the San Antonio Spurs to five championships, exchanged vows this week with Mary Barth Budenholzer, the former wife of his longtime assistant coach, Mike Budenholzer.

According to a marriage license obtained by TMZ Sports, the couple said “I do” on September 16 in Bexar County, Texas. The document lists Popovich and Barth Budenholzer as the newlyweds. Mary, who worked closely with Coach Pop during the Spurs' championship runs, has been a familiar figure in the organization for years.

Isaiah Thomas Pushes for WNBA First-Round Series Overhaul
Isaiah Thomas is the latest voice calling for the WNBA to adopt a best-of-five first-round playoff series, a change many fans say is long overdue.

Popovich’s first wife, Erin, passed away in April 2018 after 42 years of marriage. The couple had been together since 1976. Now, Popovich is starting a new chapter with Mary, who was part of the Spurs family during their dynasty years.

Mike Budenholzer, 57, served as an assistant coach in San Antonio from 1996 to 2013, helping the team capture four NBA titles. He later became head coach of the Atlanta Hawks (2013-18), the Milwaukee Bucks (2018-23, winning a championship in 2021), and most recently the Phoenix Suns (2024-25).

Popovich retired as Spurs head coach in May 2025 after a storied 29-year tenure. In his farewell statement, he expressed gratitude: “While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach. I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and city that are so meaningful to me.”

His successor, Mitch Johnson, led the Spurs to an NBA Finals appearance last June, keeping the franchise in the spotlight. Popovich’s legacy, however, extends beyond the court—his marriage to Mary is a heartwarming reminder that love knows no age.

As the news spreads, fans and colleagues alike are sending their best wishes to the couple. For a coach who has seen it all, this new chapter is perhaps his most personal victory yet.
