The 2026 NFL season is nearly upon us, and while the football world buzzes with anticipation, one prominent figure remains conspicuously absent: Dianna Russini. The former lead NFL insider for The Athletic stepped down in April amid a personal controversy, and her next move has been a subject of intense speculation. Now, a trusted colleague and friend has offered a glimpse into what the future may hold for Russini.
Appearing on Tuesday's episode of The Tom Tolbert Show, veteran NFL insider Mike Silver—who previously worked alongside Russini—shared his belief that she will not stay away from the game for long. However, Silver suggests that Russini's return may take a different shape than her previous role as a breaking-news reporter.
“I do think she’s going to be back, probably not as an insider, at least in the short term,” Silver said. “But I think she’ll be back in this realm, probably talking about football and other things pretty soon.”
Silver, who has built a reputation for his insightful reporting, expressed pride in the work he and Russini accomplished together during their time as colleagues. He also conveyed a sense of loss over the abrupt end of their professional partnership.
“[I’m] really, really proud of the journalism we did together and honestly just really bummed that we don’t get to continue it because we worked really well together,” he said.
Beyond the professional realm, Silver offered a personal note, acknowledging the strength of Russini's family support system. He stopped short of sharing any private details, respecting the boundaries of her personal life.
“I do know her family,” Silver said. “She’s got a great family. And so, you know, a lot of people have had a lot of thoughts about it.”
Russini's departure from The Athletic came after photos surfaced in April showing her with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel at an Arizona resort, appearing affectionate. Both denied any inappropriate relationship, but the ensuing scrutiny led The Athletic to launch an internal investigation into whether her connection with Vrabel compromised her reporting. Russini resigned on April 14, citing the distraction as unacceptable.
The controversy deepened when additional photos emerged of Russini and Vrabel kissing at a New York City bar in 2020, before her marriage. Vrabel took responsibility for the distraction, temporarily stepped away from the Patriots to seek counseling, and was ultimately cleared by the NFL under its personal-conduct policy.
As the league prepares to kick off, the question of where Russini lands next remains open. Silver's comments suggest she may pivot to a more analytical or commentary-driven role, a shift that could align with the growing trend of former insiders finding new homes in media ventures like Fantasy Life. While her future is uncertain, one thing is clear: Russini's voice in football discussions is far from silenced.
