Sean Payton had a wild idea that would have rewritten NFL history. According to ESPN's Seth Wickersham, the Denver Broncos head coach offered to temporarily step aside so Bill Belichick could take the reins in Denver and chase down Don Shula's all-time wins record.
The plan was as audacious as it was unconventional: Payton would hand over head coaching duties to Belichick, move to assistant head coach and oversee the offense, and then reclaim the top job once Belichick had secured the 15 victories needed to surpass Shula. It would have been a bizarre arrangement, but one that Payton was reportedly willing to explore.
Belichick, now 74 and entering his second season at North Carolina, remains second on the all-time wins list (including playoffs) behind Shula. After the New England Patriots parted ways with him following the 2023 season, Belichick interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons job but ultimately landed in college football. Denver wasn't even on the radar at the time.
The Broncos had just finished Payton's first season at 8-9 — the franchise's best record since 2016. Had the plan come to fruition, Belichick would have coached rookie quarterback Bo Nix in 2024. If the results mirrored Payton's 2024 campaign, Belichick would have broken the record in Week 5 of the 2025 season against the New York Giants — a team he won two Super Bowls with as defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells, who later hired Payton in Dallas.
The transition of power would have created a fascinating subplot. Belichick would presumably hand the team back to Payton, potentially watching from afar as the Broncos faced the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. The drama and potential turmoil would have been immense.
In the end, the idea was deemed too complicated and too fanciful. Payton instead led the Broncos to a 14-3 record last season, and he sits just six wins shy of 200 career victories. Meanwhile, Belichick is forging his own path in college football, where his girlfriend, 25, has filed unusual open records requests at UNC, adding another layer of intrigue to his post-NFL life.
The Broncos organization has faced other challenges this season, including a tragic incident at their facility and off-field issues involving linebacker Jonathon Cooper. But the what-if scenario of Payton and Belichick sharing a sideline remains one of the most fascinating untold stories in recent NFL history.
