Both Reese and Mauigoa are expected to step in as immediate starters, reinforcing the core of John Harbaugh’s squad. “It’s two picks that strengthen us down the middle,” Harbaugh said. “Down the middle of our offense, down the middle of our defense. These are great players, these are two top-five players in this draft, in our opinion. You couldn’t do any better.”
That kind of draft haul naturally leads to speculation: could Reese eventually push Thibodeaux off the roster? ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that the Giants don’t intend to trade the former Oregon star, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning. A social media user known as “Rickey Scoops” stirred the pot on Friday, claiming, “The Giants and Saints have had serious talks about a trade involving Kayvon Thibodeaux. The situation will need to be monitored.”
The Saints, who bypassed Miami pass rusher Rueben Bain Jr. in the first round to grab Arizona State wideout Jordyn Tyson, clearly have a need on the edge. Chase Young is a bona fide game-changer at defensive end, but he needs a running mate to truly terrorize opposing quarterbacks. Thibodeaux, despite some ups and downs since entering the league in 2022, has racked up 152 tackles, 55 QB hits, 23.5 sacks, and six forced forced fumbles. That kind of production would be a major boost for New Orleans’ pass rush.
For Giants fans, the idea of moving on from a former top-five pick might sting, especially given the recent health scare involving Giants legend Lawrence Taylor. But the front office has shown it’s not afraid to make bold moves. While Schefter’s report suggests no imminent deal, the draft floor is a place where things can change in a heartbeat.
