The University of Toledo track & field program is reeling after 19-year-old pole vaulter Eva Moran died in a vehicle accident Friday evening. The tragedy has left the campus community in shock and mourning.
Moran, a sophomore from Toledo, Ohio, was pursuing a degree in health sciences and had already posted the sixth-best pole vault in school history. She cleared 3.57 meters at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships this season. But her bright future was cut short on a highway just outside Toledo.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 5:28 p.m. on Friday. Moran was driving eastbound when her vehicle struck the rear of a GMC Arcadia. She then crossed the centerline into the path of an oncoming Jeep Grand Cherokee. The collision ejected her from the car, and she died at the scene.
The driver of the GMC Arcadia, also 19, was treated at the scene for injuries. The 23-year-old driver of the Jeep sustained minor injuries and was later taken to a hospital. The investigation remains ongoing.
University of Toledo athletic director Tom Moreland released a statement Saturday expressing the school's grief. “The University of Toledo community is heartbroken by the loss of Eva Moran,” Moreland said. “Eva was an outstanding student-athlete whose determination, character and positive spirit made an impact on everyone who had the opportunity to know her.” He added, “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Eva’s parents, Alena and Derrek, and her siblings, Maddox, Jaxton and Kya.”
The athletic department posted a tribute on social media, writing, “The Toledo community has suffered an unimaginable loss.”
Condolences poured in from across the country. The Eastern Michigan University track and field team wrote, “Expressing our sincere condolences for the loss of Eva. Our thoughts are with the Toledo family.” Toledo’s associate athletic director said, “Incredibly sad loss. My heart goes out to her family and friends.”
Moran was more than a promising athlete. She placed third at the GVSU Big Meet in February and fourth at the 56th Annual GINA Relays in April. Her teammates and coaches remember her as a hardworking and positive presence. The tragedy echoes recent losses in sports, including the death of 18-year-old Tulane football recruit Deontavis Cooper in a Memorial Day crash.
The entire Toledo community is left to grapple with the loss of a young life taken too soon. As the investigation continues, those who knew Moran are holding onto her memory and the impact she made in her short time.
