The Las Vegas Raiders have made a bold statement about their quarterback room: experience wins out over pedigree—at least for now.
Head coach Klint Kubiak announced Wednesday that veteran Kirk Cousins will lead the Silver and Black into their season opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 13, a decision that snaps a notable NFL tradition.
For the sixth consecutive year, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft had started on opening day. That streak ends with Fernando Mendoza, the Raiders' prized rookie, who will watch from the sideline as Cousins takes the first snap.
ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed the historic break: "The last six quarterbacks selected No. 1 overall had started on opening day. Raiders QB and No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza now will snap that streak, but this has been the Raiders' plan all along. Mendoza's time is coming—just not on opening day."
Kubiak didn't mince words when addressing the media. "Kirk's going to be the starting quarterback," he said, setting the tone for a press conference that left no doubt about the hierarchy.
The coach explained that Cousins earned the job through a stellar offseason and training camp. "He's played really good football," Kubiak said. "I'm really happy with all three of our quarterbacks. Kirk's had a really good offseason, really good camp. And he's earned it."
The competition, according to Kubiak, elevated everyone. "I think [competition] made Kirk better, it made Aiden [O'Connell] better, it made Fernando better," he continued. "That's the nature of the position—it's the most competitive position in the free world. And those guys all improved the roster through their play this offseason."
This move aligns with the Raiders' long-term vision for Mendoza, who has already shown flashes of charisma and talent, including a memorable tribute to Joe Buck that endeared him to fans. But the team is clearly prioritizing his development over immediate gratification, a strategy that has drawn both praise and skepticism.
