Pat Narduzzi has done a solid job keeping Pitt competitive during his decade at the helm, but he might have stirred up a hornet's nest with his latest comments. In a radio appearance on 680 The Fan in Atlanta, the Panthers head coach went to bat for the entire ACC, claiming it's not just on par with the Big Ten and SEC—it's actually better.

“This conference is as good as any conference in the country,” Narduzzi said. “I don’t care what you make and all that. I don’t care about how many resources you have and all that baloney... Coming from Michigan State, spent eight seasons there. Coming to Pitt in 2015, I said it then, I said it now. After about two years in the league, this conference is better — it’s better than the Big Ten. It’s got more skill… I’ve said that for years and I’m going to stick to my guns.”

NC State Legend and Dad of Five Dies in Tragic Accident at 39
Jack Roney, a former NC State swimmer and assistant coach, died unexpectedly at 39. He leaves behind a wife and five children. The community is in mourning.

The comments quickly caught fire on social media, with the audio clip being shared widely. But the backlash was immediate, especially from Big Ten fans and college football analysts who pointed out a glaring problem: Narduzzi's own record against the Big Ten is a dismal 1-6.

“Narduzzi is 1-6 against the Big Ten. What a lying coward he is. Actually embarrassing,” one Penn State fan wrote. Another added, “The middle and the bottom of the ACC could probably hang with the Big 10, but they’d get obliterated in the top six matchups. They’d be lucky to win a game or two against the SEC.”

Critics also highlighted the ACC's recent struggles on the national stage. The conference hasn't won a college football national title since Clemson beat Alabama in January 2019. Meanwhile, the Big Ten has produced the last three national champions—and the SEC has dominated for years before that. As one fan put it, “3 National Titles by 3 different BIG 10 teams in the last 3 years. Must have been luck. Not skill.”

Even some ACC supporters pushed back. “I’m an ACC guy, but have to respectfully disagree. ACC is a quality conference but the Big 10 is def a deeper league w a (expletive) ton of talent,” one fan said. Another was more blunt: “If you aren’t Clemson, FSU or Miami .. then you are closer to the sun belt than the big ten .. acc schools need to know their place .. this is preposterous.”

Narduzzi's bold claim also comes amid broader scrutiny of conference strength and officiating controversies. For example, world cup semifinal referee decisions have recently sparked debate about fairness in high-stakes games. But in college football, the debate is about talent depth and scheduling. Last year, Pitt finished 8-5, playing zero Big Ten or SEC teams, and lost to East Carolina in its bowl game. That record didn't help Narduzzi's argument.

“lol. The ACC does have more wins against the Big10 last year, but your bowl wins are hilarious because the ACC teams are weak and only play the dregs from Big10 and SEC. Pitt was 8-5, played ZERO Big10 or SEC teams, and lost to ECU in the bowl. Stolen valor, Narduzzi?” another fan wrote.

Narduzzi, for his part, isn't backing down. He doubled down on his stance, saying he's “sticking to his guns.” But with a 1-6 record against the Big Ten and the ACC's recent lack of a national title, his words are drawing more heat than respect. The question now is whether his team can back up his talk on the field this season.
