Peyton and Eli Manning have never been shy about sharing their opinions, and during Monday night's ManningCast, the brothers turned their ire toward the officiating crew. The target? A baffling clock stoppage in overtime that they believed unfairly iced Rams kicker Harrison Mevis.
The drama unfolded midway through the extra period as Mevis lined up for a 48-yard field goal that could have won the game for Los Angeles against the visiting Buffalo Bills. But just as Mevis was preparing to kick, the clock unexpectedly stopped. Peyton, watching alongside Jim Nantz, immediately questioned the decision.
"There's no timeouts, why is the clock stopped?" Manning demanded. "The referees are icing him. That's nice. No explanation."
For those unfamiliar, "icing the kicker" is a tactic where a coach calls a timeout just before a field goal attempt, hoping to rattle the kicker. While there's little statistical proof it works, it's a common psychological ploy. Peyton and Eli were convinced the refs had essentially done the same thing—but without the timeout.
As the Manning brothers vented their frustration, Mevis's kick was blocked by Gregory Rousseau. The Bills then drove 35 yards to set up Tyler Bass for the game-winning field goal. The Rams' overtime heartbreak was complete.
Later, ESPN commentators Joe Buck and Troy Aikman clarified the confusion: the officials had simply re-spotted the ball. However, instead of letting the play clock run down, Rams head coach Sean McVay demanded a reset. McVay later took responsibility for the situation.
"I'm sick that we came up short and I'll be regretting kicking that and not having a better call to be able to go for it on third down and go to fourth or whatever it was. And that's on me," McVay said, via the New York Post.
Unfortunately, Mevis bore the brunt of the fallout. He was released hours after the game, having also missed another field goal. The Rams quickly signed Blake Grupe as their new kicker. It's a harsh reminder of the NFL's win-now mentality, as detailed in our report on McVay cutting Mevis.
While the ManningCast is known for its humor and candor, this moment highlighted the fine line between entertainment and genuine frustration. The brothers' criticism of the refs added another layer of controversy to an already wild Monday night.
