The New England Patriots family and the broader NFL community are rallying around rookie tight end Eli Raridon and his wife, Anna, after the couple shared devastating personal news. Their newborn son, Peter James, passed away on Sept. 11, 2026, just weeks after Raridon began his professional career with a storybook touchdown in Week 1.
Raridon, selected 95th overall in this year’s NFL Draft, made an immediate splash against the Seattle Seahawks, finding the end zone in his very first game. But the joy of that moment has been overshadowed by an unimaginable loss. Anna Raridon revealed on Instagram that their son was diagnosed with anencephaly, a fatal condition in which a baby does not survive outside the womb, during their 20-week anatomy scan.
In a deeply moving post, Anna described the moment their lives changed forever. “When Eli and I went in for our 20-week anatomy scan, excited to see our sweet baby boy, our hearts were forever changed,” she wrote. “While we are absolutely devastated that we were unable to bring our baby boy home, I am grateful to have loved him deeply, kept him safe, and had been his home for the past 9 months before he was called back to Heaven.”
She also shared a message of faith amid the pain. “I have often found it easy to glorify the Lord when life is going well, but it is in our deepest trials that we are drawn closest to Him,” Anna continued. “We may never understand the why behind this journey, but one thing we know with certainty is that God promises to care for His children.” She added that their son’s life, though brief, was precious and purposeful. “I have loved you every second of your life & will miss you every second of mine. What a sweet sweet reunion ours will be.”
The news has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from fans, particularly in Massachusetts. Social media timelines filled with messages of support, with one Patriots fan writing on X, “That’s just awful. Love to Eli and his wife. Take all the time you need man. Every single second.” Another added, “Terrible. So much love and prayers to the entire family.” A third commented, “There is not a strong enough word to describe this level of heartbreak.”
It remains uncertain whether Raridon will step away from the team to be with his family. The Patriots have not released a statement on his availability for upcoming games. In the meantime, the organization and its supporters are offering whatever comfort they can.
This tragedy is the latest in a series of heartbreaking stories that have shaken the sports world recently. Just days ago, the swimming community mourned the sudden death of legendary coach Frank Busch, while the AFL grieved with star Mark Hutchings after the passing of his wife Hannah just two days after childbirth. Closer to home, the Patriots have already faced their share of off-field drama, including tension between Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel that has dominated headlines.
For now, the focus is on the Raridon family as they navigate this profound loss. The sports world often celebrates victories and championships, but moments like these remind us of the humanity behind the helmets and jerseys. Our thoughts are with Eli, Anna, and their loved ones.
