The New England Patriots are reportedly preparing for a potential coaching shake-up. With Mike Vrabel navigating a personal scandal that has rocked the franchise, whispers out of Foxborough suggest the team already has a high-profile replacement in mind: former Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

Vrabel, now in his second season with the Patriots, has been at the center of controversy after multiple photos surfaced showing him in intimate moments with former NFL insider Dianna Russini. The scandal has cast a shadow over the team, leading Vrabel to step away from Day 3 of the NFL Draft to focus on his family and seek counseling.

Brady's Favorite Hamptons Bash Rescheduled to Avoid Swift-Kelce Wedding Clash
Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin shifts his annual Hamptons white party from July 4 to July 1 to avoid conflicting with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's rumored wedding. Tom Brady, a frequent attendee, won't have to choose.

“I promised my family, this organization and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can possibly give them,” Vrabel said. “In order to do so, I have committed to seeking counseling, starting this weekend.” He added, “This is not an easy thing for me to admit, but it is one that I know will make me a better person.”

While Patriots ownership has not indicated any plans to fire Vrabel, the growing controversy has sparked speculation. A Patriots insider told the Daily Mail that the franchise has its eyes on Tomlin if a change becomes necessary. Tomlin, who left the Steelers after the 2025 season, has been vocal about his reasons for stepping away from coaching—at least for now.

“It’s probably not an overnight decision,” Tomlin said of his move. “But it’s probably not something that I could articulate or share with people. There’s a loneliness with leadership. I just thought it was a good time for me personally.”

Tomlin also pointed to recent playoff struggles as a factor. “We didn’t have a lot of success in the playoffs in recent years,” he admitted. “And there’s just some veteran players there, man. Guys like Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt and [Chris] Boswell that I thought were just worthy of the excitement and optimism associated with new leadership.”

Instead of jumping back into the coaching carousel for 2026, Tomlin opted for a TV role with NBC’s “Football Night in America.” But that could change if the Patriots come calling. As the Vrabel-Russini scandal continues to unfold, the possibility of Tomlin returning to the sidelines in New England remains a tantalizing what-if for NFL fans.
