The parents of former NFL star Doug Martin are taking legal action, demanding answers after their son died in police custody last October at the age of 29. An independent pathologist, retained by the family's attorney John Burris, concluded that Martin died from 'restrained asphyxia'—a condition caused by officers allegedly pressing his face into the floor and applying pressure to his back.
'You’d like to think that when police are called to a situation for somebody who is having a mental breakdown, the person doesn’t wind up dead,' Burris told the Chronicle. The attorney is also pushing for the release of official autopsy and toxicology reports through the lawsuit.
'The most important thing here is to find out what happened,' Burris added. 'It’s not knowing that’s the difficult part for [Martin’s family].'
Martin, a first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, enjoyed a standout career as a running back. He earned two Pro Bowl selections and one All-Pro honor, playing primarily for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before finishing his career with the Oakland Raiders.
